Embrace celebrates the work of the Sisters of Mercy

The Sisters of Mercy are the cornerstone upon which Mater’s commitment to exceptional care has been built. As a group of 263 individuals, they have worked tirelessly for more than 100 years at Mater; a contribution which represents in excess of 6 500 years of service.

Medical aid shipped to Laos

On 16 October 2008 a 40-foot shipping container was packed with medical equipment for delivery to Phonsavan, Xieng Khuang Province in Laos. Laos is one of the least developed countries in South-East Asia where health problems persist including the endemic diseases of malaria and dengue fever.

Mercy abroad

Each year Mater engages in a range of activities as part of its commitment to offering compassionate care to the sick and needy. Often these initiatives take place on home soil. At other times Mater takes its action abroad.

New Executive Director Mission Leadership

Madonna McGahan joined the Mater team as Executive Director Mission Leadership in June 2008.

One year working with Brisbane’s homeless

20 October 2008 marked Mater nurse Ros Butler’s first year in the challenging role of community clinical nurse at the Brisbane Homelessness Service Centre. In this time Ros has cared for more than 200 individual patients, whose medical conditions varied from scrapes and bruises to drug-related illnesses and cancer.

Volunteer doctors honoured for tireless contribution

The selfless contribution made by the volunteer doctors who staff the Queensland Integrated Refugee Community Health Clinic (QIRCH) gained the accolade of a Griffith Australia Day Award in January.
