Mater Private Hospital Brisbane ahead of the curve

In an Australian hospital first, Mater Private Hospital Brisbane has elevated surgical precision to a new level by trialling the state-of-the-art O-ARM® Multidimensional Surgical Imaging System.

The O-ARM® provides data for better surgical decisions as surgeons can obtain a 360° scan as well as multi-plane 2D and fluoroscopic images, combining the best features of C-arm technology with intraoperative 3D imaging and navigation.

Mater Private Hospital Executive Director, Don Murray, said the new technology is beneficial to both surgeons and patients.

Intraoperative imaging, coupled with navigation, enables surgeons to provide high quality care by delivering critical information during each phase of surgery and potentially reducing the need for repeat surgery.

For patients, the less invasive system may mean smaller incisions, faster recovery times and better surgical outcomes.

Originally designed for lumbar surgery, the O-ARM® Multidimensional Surgical Imaging System aids surgeons by providing real-time imagery of patient anatomy in high risk surgery by providing both 2D and 3D imaging. This effectively eliminates the need for some pre- and post-operative CT scanning, thereby reducing the effects of radiation and saving time. The 3D imaging also helps surgeons navigate instrumentation into position safely and quickly.

During the trial period of the O-ARM®, which commenced in June 2008, Mater Private Hospital Brisbane has successfully used the device in a variety of procedures including cervical spine, pituitary tumours and minimally-invasive and open lumbar spine cases.

The O-ARM® works in conjunction with the StealthStation® Surgical Navigation System or as a stand-alone imaging device.
