Medical aid shipped to Laos

On 16 October 2008 a 40-foot shipping container was packed with medical equipment for delivery to Phonsavan, Xieng Khuang Province in Laos. Laos is one of the least developed countries in South-East Asia where health problems persist including the endemic diseases of malaria and dengue fever.

Hotel Services offers training opportunities

Twenty-eight staff members from Mater’s Hotel Services Directorate were involved in traineeship courses being coordinated through its Training Cost Centre in 2008. This number makes Mater one of the largest health care providers of accredited food and hospitality services training in South East Queensland.

One year working with Brisbane’s homeless

20 October 2008 marked Mater nurse Ros Butler’s first year in the challenging role of community clinical nurse at the Brisbane Homelessness Service Centre. In this time Ros has cared for more than 200 individual patients, whose medical conditions varied from scrapes and bruises to drug-related illnesses and cancer.

Dr Paul Truscott retires from private practice

After more than 2800 admissions, approximately 1600 surgical procedures and the delivery of some 2000 babies at Mater Private Hospital Redland (MPHR), Dr Paul Truscott put away his stethoscope to retire from private practice in 2008.

Mater Pathology rapid growth continues

In November 2008 Mater Pathology opened its 17th and latest collection centre, capping off a year of rapid and exciting growth for Mater Pathology. Based in Wickham Terrace, this collection centre is located within the heart of Brisbane’s most well known medical specialist precinct.
