At 4.12 pm Jessica Simmonds was born at Mater Mothers’ Hospital, she was 15 weeks premature and weighed 382 grams. Her untimely arrival was a matter of necessity as Jessica’s mother, Karleen, was in danger of losing her own life suffering from the rare HELLP Syndrome, a severe complication of pre-eclampsia.

An initiative by the Mater Children’s Hospital, which began in January 2008, is proving effective in reducing hospital admissions for young patients suffering from Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and Bronchiectasis.

On Friday 4 April 2008, Mater Adult Hospital Breast Care Unit Clinical Nurse Consultant Maureen Gleeson was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for her service to nursing and to women diagnosed with breast cancer.
